Jiu Jitsu is derived from the Japanese where it is know as Jujutsu, a martial art method of close combat for engaging and defeating an armed and armored opponent in with no weapon. Ju translates as gentle or flexible and Jutsu means art or technique. It represents the manipulation of the opponents force against him or herself.
Jujutsu evolved in feudal Japan among the Samurai warriors as means of defeating an armored opponent without the use of a weapon. Since striking an armored opponent can be ineffective, they needed to find a method to circumvent the armor and neutralize the enemy effectively. This came in the form of pins, joint locks and throws.
There were many variations of the art of Jujutsu and interpretations which has lead to a variety of schools of approach to the martial art. Variations may include the use of grappling throwing, trapping,locks, holds, gouging, striking and kicking. Advanced Jiu Jitsu may include the use of weapons.
